President’s Message
Tara Landry, President
My fellow CHLA/ABSC members,
Well, here we are again, with another year almost under our belts. The leaves have fallen and the Holiday Season is rapidly approaching, with the promise of a new year right on its heels. Personally, I have always loved the arrival of a new year. Not necessarily for the festivities (although anyone who has attended a CHLA/ABSC Conference after party will know that I have had my moments!), but rather for the opportunity it provides me to reflect on the past and plan, usually quite happily, for what the coming year will bring.
That was very much the spirit of the Fall Board meetings, which took place virtually in 4 meetings over 2 weeks between October 28 th and November 5th . As is usually the case during these meetings, the first item on our agenda was a strategic planning exercise, where we looked at what we were able to accomplish in the past year, and determined our operational plan for the upcoming year <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.chla-absc.ca/docs/Operational_Plan_2018-2021_year_four.pdf__;!!CjcC7IQ!cbifTtrKlEiCbbWfcSTxi70WCCJDAmLkj6QKSkeQ-1bclZnnTpW1TDBKZP6MzEi2FxGV$> , based on our current strategic plan.
As those of you who have been CHLA/ABSC members for a few years will know, in 2017, the CHLA/ABSC Board embarked on a comprehensive process that led to the creation of a strategic plan for 2018-2021, which identified priorities and specifies where the Board would direct their energies. Planning for a new strategic plan should have begun during the Winter 2020 Board meetings, but then, in the words of Bo Burnham, "the funniest thing happened"...
Obviously, a new strategic plan was the furthest thing from everyone’s mind at the time. During our Fall 2020 meeting, the Board decided to postpone embarking on a new strategic planning process, which would have begun during the Winter 2021 Board meetings, for another year.
During that year we focused on keeping our heads above water, and thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Board, the CE committee, our wonderful Conference Planning Committee, and our association management firm, to say nothing of the dedication of our members to this association, CHLA/ABSC was able to weather the storm get back on more stable financial footing. Which is why, during our 2021 Fall meetings, the Board decided it was time to move forward. The next CHLA/ABSC strategic plan, which we have started to set the groundwork for, should come out in June 2023.
Other highlights from the meeting include:
* Leadership Institute : the Board reviewed the final report from the CHLA/ABSC Leadership Institute steering committee. Special thanks go out to Sandy Iverson, former CHLA/ABSC president and co-chair of the Leadership Institute steering committee, for presenting the report and discussing potential next steps.
* Conference 2022 : our new, national CHLA/ABSC conference planning committee (CPC) is already hard at work planning a hybrid conference, which will have both virtual and in-person events, for 2022. The call for presentations went out on November 19 th – show us what you’ve got!
* Grants & awards : important discussions about the evaluation criteria for CHLA/ABSC grants and awards took place during the meeting. In an effort to facilitate Board decision-making, improve transparency and increase uptake of CHLA/ABSC awards, the Board will begin by reviewing the evaluation criteria and rubric for the Flower Award for Innovation. Our hope is that, by assessing the evaluation criteria and revising the rubric used by the Board, this award, which was originally intended to provide an opportunity to recognize mid-career librarians, will be more accessible. A reminder to submit nominations for our various awards, along with more information on the new evaluation criteria for the Flower Award, will go out in the new year.
In conclusion, I would like to extend my thanks to the Board of Directors and the amazing volunteer members of our committees, task forces, interest groups, and Chapter executives, particularly those in Western Canada, who are dealing with particularly challenging, stressful times. Thank you for your continued commitment to our profession and to this association.
REMINDER: Awards and Grants
It's still early but that means there's plenty of time to think about it and submit your applications! Additional calls will be sent out in the new year, but we want to remind you that nominations for our CHLA/ABSC annual awards and grants are open, and you are welcome to submit nominations and applications.
For more information on each award and grant please visit the Awards and Funding page <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.chla-absc.ca/awards_and_funding.php__;!!CjcC7IQ!cbifTtrKlEiCbbWfcSTxi70WCCJDAmLkj6QKSkeQ-1bclZnnTpW1TDBKZP6MzDgjsK8T$> . Nominations for awards are due February 1st, 2022; with the exception of the JCHLA/ABSC Student Paper Prize, which is due April 30 and the Flower Award (currently under revision) due is March 1st.
Conference 2022: Let's try this again... / Essayons encore une fois...!
Tim Tripp and Juanita Richardson, Co-Chairs 2022 CPC
The Conference Planning Committee is well underway, planning for our hybrid conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario!
Yes, to enable access by ALL our members, we will have a conference that is in-person and with a virtual attendance option! We know from the very successful virtual conference last year in Winnipeg that virtual is an option that encourages participation from our members far and wide. That said, we also know that we are excited to see each other face to face again.
As we were almost in Niagara Falls in 2020, our theme this year is: Let's try this again... / Essayons encore une fois... Mark your calendars now! Saturday, June 11 – Monday, June 13, 2022 - see you in Niagara Falls – in person or online!
The call for submissions is now open! Find more information on our conference website<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.chla-absc.ca/welcome_to_chla_2022.php__;!!CjcC7IQ!cbifTtrKlEiCbbWfcSTxi70WCCJDAmLkj6QKSkeQ-1bclZnnTpW1TDBKZP6MzCe615wN$>.
