Hello Everyone,

We are delighted to share a complete description for our next event and hope you will join us on Wednesday April 5th at 10 am Pacific Time (1 pm Eastern Time) for a panel-based conversation about challenging evidence synthesis consultations.

Our wonderful panelists are:

Jessie Cunningham, Medical Librarian - Hospital for Sick Children Toronto (SickKids)
Experience & context: Evidence synthesis support is a core service in the SickKids Library, and we serve clients from around the hospital including researchers from the SickKids Research Institute, Fellows, Residents, Physicians, as well as Nursing and Allied Health staff, and occasionally other non-clinical staff. One type of challenging interview that comes up frequently is navigating evidence synthesis projects in unrealistic timelines and expectations, as well as highlighting realities of what evidence synthesis projects actually entail, particularly for clinical trainees that have existing clinical priorities and other educational commitments.

Dr. Alix Hayden, Liaison Librarian - Libraries and Cultural Resources, University of Calgary
Experience & context: At the University of Calgary, Alix provides evidence synthesis support as a co-researcher, consultant and supervisory member, to graduate students as well as faculty and researchers in a variety of disciplines, primarily nursing and kinesiology. Through consultations with graduate students, she often encounters students who have been provided with incorrect guidance from their supervisors. These situations are challenging as one must be careful not to undermine the faculty member while also providing the most appropriate guidance for the graduate student.

Robin Parker, Evidence Synthesis Librarian - WK Kellogg Health Sciences Library, Dalhousie Libraries, Dalhousie University
Experience & context: At the WK Kellogg Health Sciences Library, Robin works with students and researchers across the health sciences, but especially in medicine, and has led the ES support for over 10 years. The learners can range from upper year undergraduate students working on capstone or honours projects, to medical students and residents, to graduate students in Masters or Doctoral programs. Both for learners and other researchers, the biggest challenges are around managing expectations and building capacity around the review methods as a whole, so that the requesters understand the implications of the decisions around the search process.

Lindsey Sikora, Head of Research Support (Health Sciences, Medicine and STEM) - University of Ottawa
Experience & context: At the University of Ottawa, Lindsey is involved in providing knowledge synthesis support which is a core service. The library serves graduate students from the Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, although there has been an increase among other disciplines. They also serve researchers from these faculties, as well as residents, physicians, nurses and other allied healthcare workers from our affiliated research hospitals. One challenge that appears frequently is managing the feasibility and expectations of our population when conducting these reviews, as well as navigating the capacity issues we face as the demand for these services rise, and librarians balance their other responsibilities with the increase of this demand.
